Brandon Music

Ian Ethan Case with Bertram Lehmann

Saturday, January 30th at 7:30pm

Ian Ethan Case, a Boston-based multi-instrumentalist best known for his innovative approach to the 18-string acoustic double-neck guitar, has become a favorite at Brandon Music. Audiences have recognized the talent that has Ian increasingly gaining recognition both for his unique instrumental compositions and for the highly original playing methods which are required to perform them. Ian will perform along with Berklee College of Music percussionist Bertram Lehmann.

They will preview new compositions from Ian's next album “Earth Suite”, as well as perform exciting duo versions of songs from his recent “Run Toward The Mountains” album. Bertram has an advanced degree from Tufts in Ethnomusicology and is the Assistant Percussion Professor at Berklee College of Music where he teaches a world music class. Ian is thrilled to be bringing Bertram to Brandon Music; “He is really an incredible musician and the word “percussionist” really doesn't do justice to the extremely wide range of sounds, textures and dynamic shaping he brings to the music. Using a jungle of percussive instruments from all over the world, he really helps highlight the structure of these compositions in beautiful and effective ways, and of course it's so much more fun and inspiring getting to play with someone as opposed to just doing my solo thing. Some of the best improvised solos I feel like I've ever done have been when playing live with Bertram.”

During a fall 2015 coast-to-coast tour of the US, a Facebook video of Ian playing a piece from his new album “Run Toward The Mountains” went viral and received over 6 million views worldwide in October alone, drawing unsolicited praise from legendary bassist Leland Sklar (James Taylor, Phil Collins), producer Steven Miller (Dave Matthews Band, Bobby McFerrin, Michael Hedges), and Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackerman. The self-produced double-disc album features two sides of his playing: “straight up solo acoustic” double-neck, and at the other end of the spectrum, his meticulously-crafted live looping compositions which make full use of 21st-century digital technologies to enable seemingly infinite layers of sound and sophisticated on-the-spot orchestration that extends well beyond the reach of most looping performers.

“Few musicians tackle the challenging double-neck guitar”, says The Christian Science Monitor, “and perhaps few have done it with the intellectual intensity and skill of Ian Ethan Case. Case's inventive multi-layered compositions are like nothing you've heard before. His new album, Run Toward The Mountains, is both meditative and commanding.” “Run Toward The Mountains” was self-released in August, and subsequently picked up and re-released by Candyrat Records, a modern acoustic fingerstyle guitar label, bringing artists like Andy McKee to international attention.

ertram Lehmann, who has over 20 CD recordings, has conducted clinics and workshops at top institutions including Harvard University, Wellesley College, and Moscow Conservatory, among others. He has appeared at such venues as Lincoln Center, Boston Symphony Hall, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Kennedy Center, and is a current or former member of DUNYA, the Luciana Souza Quintet, Mango Blue, the Mili Bermejo Group, Natraj, the Osmany Paredes Group, the Tony Perez Quartet, and Katie Viqueira and Tierra Tango.
