Maple Jam performs at Brandon Music

Saturday, July 12th at 7:30pm

Vermont's own a cappella jazz octet, specializing in Grade A Fancy vocal arrangements of sweet love songs and swinging big band favorites, returns to Brandon Music. Maple Jam sings a range of 4 to 8 part a cappella music in close harmony. The Brandon Music program will include Splanky, Birdland, Moonlight in Vermont, Waltz for Debby, L'il Darlin', Milonga del Angel and many other popular tunes.

Their repertoire ranges from classic jazz and swing to pop and ballads. With their trademark rich blend of voices and smooth jazz harmonies, the group draws inspiration from a number of a cappella groups including The Singers Unlimited, The Swingle Singers, Manhattan Transfer and The Real Group. Although rumored to be particularly vulnerable to the lush vocal arrangements of Gene Puerling, Maple Jam has refused to confirm or deny this allegation.

Vermont Public Radio host Walter Parker notes, “I always enjoy listening to Maple Jam. Their clever--often amusing--arrangements, sweet close harmony, and jazzy swing make for an irresistible blend. It's a cappella singing in the finest tradition.”

Formed in 2004 by members of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the group has delighted audiences at numerous venues around Vermont (and Québec and Ontario!).  In addition to performing for standing room only crowds at the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, Maple Jam has appeared at New Year's Eve celebrations in Burlington, Montpelier and Bristol as well as at the VPR Listener Picnic at Billings Farm in Woodstock.

The octet consists of Karen Chickering (soprano), Alexandra Tursi (soprano), Vikki Day (alto), Clara Cavitt (alto), Jeff Prescott, (tenor), Maarten van Ryckevorsel (tenor and vocal percussion), Andy Warner (baritone), and Jose Schmidt (bass). Their 2012 release includes There Will Never Be Another You, Waltz for Debby, Misty, Orange Colored Sky, L'il Darlin', Where is Love?, Night and Day, Milonga del Angel, Come Sunday and Splanky.

Tickets are $15 with a pre-concert dinner available for an additional $20. Reservations are highly recommended for the show and required for dinner. Venue is BYOB. Call (802) 465-4071 or e-mail us for reservations or more information.
